Childhood
There is not a childhood memory that does not involve grandpa and grandma. Shannon, Jennifer, and I spending 2 weeks every summer at their house, and the memories we have are endless. The garage sales, playing in the whipping willow, the neighbors across the street, grandpa having buttermilk before bed, etc., Grandma taught me how to sew and how to paint a picture. Grandpa was in his work shop carving something and it always smelled like cedar or some sort of wood. Their parakeet bird always chirping early in the morning and grandpa talking to him while grandma made us breakfast and they tried to be quiet to let us sleep. My first perm was when grandma took us to the parlor and had it professionally done and chemical got all in my eyes. Always coming to their house and having them apply calamine lotion to us because we had gotten into something. Grandpa getting on to us because we would rescue caterpillars from the mean neighborhood boys who wanted to use them as bait, and bring them into grandpa's garden. That is when I learned caterpillars will eat a garden. Helping grandma clean and always getting to dust grandpa's red piggy bank, his scanner going off, and how he helped Shannon when she choked on a butterscotch on the way to Vacation Bible School.
Just so many memories. I know I was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of grandpa's stories and put them into a bound book for him one year for Christmas and I remember the joy when he opened that present. That book will always be a cherish to me as it is written by him and you can hear grandpa re-living and re-counting those stories. The trips to Waldron to walk the family cemetery and hear the tails of passed loved ones; forever cherished moments of grandpa.
Grandpa was so proud of all his grand kids, and we knew a hard working, humble, wonderful man. He was the kindest grandpa and I will miss him so much. As long as the memories live on, so will grandpa. I miss and love him so much.
