Obituary for Nina Jo Smith

Nina Jo Smith, 78 of Atkins, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. She was born June 7, 1942 in Oak Grove to the late Quenton and Edna Duvall Wright.

She was a member of Oakland Heights Assembly of God. She was a pianist, singer, and a song writer. She dedicated her life to God and her music. Nina Jo Graduated from Atkins High School, and at age 74 she graduated from AD Baker Insurance School. It didn’t matter if she sold a policy, she just wanted to help somebody.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bill Wright; her husband of 38 years, Charles Lay; son, James Dale Chronister; and daughter, Wendy Janell Lay.

She is survived by the love of her life, Charles Smith; one daughter, Julia Gail and husband Terry Small; 5 step-children, Tanya Lay, Lynell Albrecht and husband Gary, Lisa Pew and husband Jeff , Charlotte Milliken and husband Randy, Melissa Wheeler and husband Monty;6 grandchildren, Nathan Chronister, Brook Chronister, Eric Small, Cory Small (Kayla), Marcia Michelle Lay, Wade Garrett Lay; 6 great-grandchildren, Natalie, Corbin and Emmet Small, Jordan, Neveah, Elijah: 1 sister, Carolyn Hays; 2 nieces, Sandra and Faith; Step-grandchildren, Savannah Westmoreland, Jacob Westmoreland, Nicholas Bottoms, Ethan Bratton, Corey Garrett, Kasie Garrett, Braden Garrett, Tyler Garrett; Step-great-grandchildren, Ava Westmoreland, Aubree Westmoreland, Ariana Westmoreland Parker Garrett, Easton Garrett, Caleb Garrett, Carter Garrett.

Funeral Service will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Oakland Heights Assembly of God with Rev. Roy Chisum and husband Charles Smith officiating. Burial will be in Suggs Cemetery under the direction of Lemley Funeral Service of Atkins.

Pallbearers are Wade Lay, Gary Redell, Justin Campbell, Jamie Campbell, Anthony Chisum, Nicholas Bottoms. Honorary pallbearer, Steve Freeman.
