Mary Elma Hale Griffis, age 96, passed at home with her family on September 14, 2018. She was born on Richland Creek in Newton County on Thursday, May 18, 1922, daughter of the late Jake Hale and Clyda Moore Hale.
Mary became a believer at the age of 12 while sitting on a fence rail near her home. She was co-owner and operator of Center Valley Grocery until 1985 but continued to assist in the operation of the business until 2006 when she was 84.
She attended school at Moore where she walked from her home on Richland Creek, and later took night classes at Russellville High School. Mary served her community as the President of the Gumlog Voting Precinct and voted in the last presidential election. She also wrote the Gumlog Community Column for the Courier Democrat. Mary was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. She went to deer camp each year at Richland Creek as long as her health permitted.
Mary loved her family dearly and was our matriarch for many years which gave us direction. She in turn was loved by all who knew her. She will be deeply missed as we wait to be reunited with her in the Kingdom of our God.
She is survived by a brother, G.W. Hale of Dover; 3 daughters, Beverly Hernandez, Joyce Griffis, and Judy Griffis, all of Russellville; 12 grandchildren, Jamie Vick, Becki Helton, Jason Vick, Wesley Vick, Natasha Barton, Angela Carver, Paul Foshee, Jocelyn Foshee, J.J. Foshee, Jasmin Lyon of Russellville, Sloan McKellar of Batesville, and Kandy (K.C.) McKellar of San Antonio, Texas; 24 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 20, at Round Rock Church with Rev. Roy Chisum, Pastor Chuck Hefley and Wayne Prince of Congregation Chaim B’Derch officiating. Burial is in Moore Cemetery under the direction of Lemley Funeral Service of Atkins. Visitation is from 5:00-7:00 PM, Tuesday, September 18, at Lemley Chapel in Atkins.
Pallbearers are Paul Foshee, Angela Carver, J.J. Foshee, Sloan McKellar, K.C. McKellar, Jason Vick.
