Obituary for Carlene Austin

Carlene Stubbs Austin, 87, of Atkins Ar passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, on Saturday March 12, 2022. Born in Atkins on February 13, 1935, to Carl and Dora Vann Stubbs, she was the eleventh of twelve children. She graduated as the Salutatorian of the class of 1953 of Atkins High School, an accomplishment of which she was quite proud. Immediately following graduation, she married J.L. Austin and they began their long life together
.
She worked as a civil servant, working at the Pope County Sheriff’s Office and later retiring from the Pope County Library System. Throughout the years Carlene was active in the Atkins Jaycettes, Atkins Civic team and the People for a Better Atkins. Carlene was known for her cooking and her hospitality, hosting many family get togethers and frequently opening her home to friends and family. She would always send her loved ones home with a full stomach and a care package. She was also an active member of the Union Grove Freewill Baptist Church until her health prevented her from attending.

Carlene was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, J.L Austin; her parents Carl and Dora Vann Stubbs of Atkins; sisters Sue Eakes, Ruby Eakes, Evelyn Bauman, Mable Hegeman; brothers Pete Stubbs, Hollis Stubbs, Earle Stubbs, Tommy Gene Stubbs and Raymond Stubbs.

She is survived by her children; Carol Ann James (Jerald) of Conway, Phillip Austin (Kim) of Greenbrier and Bobby Austin (Janice) of Bedford Tx; five; grandchildren; Katie Miller of Joshua TX, Mitchell Austin of Colleyville TX, Matt James of Bryant, Steven James of Conway, Aaron Latta of Greenbrier, Alora Austin of Madison, WI and Dilton Austin of Buckhannon, WV; Nine great-grandchildren and two sisters, Helen Haney of Springdale, Mary Ann Lollis of Greenbrier and dear friend Jo Anderson of Atkins.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Thursday, March 17, at Lemley Chapel with Rev. David Bishop and Rev. Scott Warren officiating. Burial is in Atkins City Cemetery under the direction of Lemley Funeral Service of Atkins. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday.

Pallbearers are Aaron Latta, Steven James, Matt James, Mitchell Austin, Roman Miller, and Dilton Austin.
