Obituary for Alma Jean Embry
Alma “Jean” Embry, 87, of Atkins, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2019. She was born to the late James Alcie Wiley and Cora E. Dixon Wiley on June 6, 1931, in Pope County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Edward Embry; her son, Scott Edward Embry; grandson, Blake Edward Embry; brothers and sisters, James E. Wiley, Nina Wiley Arrington, Raymond Wiley, and Catherine Ann Wiley Bolton.
She is survived by her son, Billy Lynn Embry (Rosanna) of Atkins, daughter, Julie Catherine Embry of Little Rock; grandchildren Hope Embry Petty (Aaron) of Atkins and Vivie Embry of Little Rock and great grandchildren, Macie and Mason Petty of Atkins.
Jean graduated from Atkins High School and married her high school sweetheart, Carl. She made a warm home for her family and raised her three children well. While she worked behind the scenes supporting her farming family, Alma Jean loved to plot and scheme about the perfect business venture of her own. Her entrepreneurial spirit never quit and when the boys were grown, she started a business which offered women with breast cancer empowering choices after mastectomy. This grew into opening her own clothing boutique in Atkins and Russellville, which was a great source of joy for her.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Atkins and instilled the love of God in her children. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her, taking care of those she loved above all else. When her love, Carl, was in Atkins Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, she never missed a day. While visiting, she’d slip away to make the ladies “pretty,” doing hair and nails for hours. Her God-given gift was that of seeing the beauty and value of every person she encountered, and her call was to help them see it as well. In the end, it was the wonderful staff at Atkins Nursing & Rehab who made her feel pretty and cared for.
Lovingly known as “Mamma Jean,” she was tenacious and brave, never left the house without lipstick and heels, and certainly never left a gathering without telling a good story. Her kindness, ambition, and servant’s heart is her life’s greatest legacy, which we pray will live on through all who knew and loved her. May the heavenly stories commence!
Visitation will be at 1pm on Saturday, June 1st, with funeral services to follow at 2pm at Atkins First Baptist Church, the Rev. Ira Taylor officiating. Burial will be held at Atkins City Cemetery under the direction of Lemley Funeral Service of Atkins. Pallbearers/Honorary pallbearers are Jeff Embry, Morris Embry, Andy Wiley, Brian Embry, Eric Arrington, Jim Wiley, Gaylord Embry, Jim Arrington, Robert Bolton, Larry Wiley and John Wiley. Memorials can be made to Atkins First Baptist Church, 201 N. Church, Atkins, AR 72823.
